Description

Friction stir welding (FSW) experiments were performed on 6005A-T6 (Al, 0.49%Mg, 0.61%Si) alloy plates (thickness 6 mm) using a fully instrumented CNC milling machine, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated. Microstructural characterisation was undertaken in different weld zones (HAZ, TMAZ, nugget) using TEM. Global tensile tests were conducted in the extrusion and transverse long directions and the yield strength was evaluated. Local mechanical properties were studied by Vickers microhardness measurements, digital image correlation and micro-tensile tests. Issues discussed include the strain hardening capacity of Guinier-Preston zones in the weld nugget, tensile strength differences between the HAZ and nugget, and the effect of cooling rate on precipitate coarsening in the HAZ.
