Description
An investigation is presented into the bending properties of welded joints prepared by friction stir welding (FSW) in various structural aluminium alloys during which the influence of process conditions and alloy composition (Mg, Si, Zn levels) was clarified. The experimental specimens comprised plates (thickness 8 mm) of 5083-O (Al, 4.65%Mg), 6N01-T5 (6005C: Al, 0.44-0.68%Mg, 0.55-0.62%Si) and : 7N01-T5 (7204: Al, 4.18-4.49%Zn, 1.06-1.39%Mg, 0.38-0.64%Mn) alloys. FSW was performed in a square-butt geometry under different process conditions. Bend tests were undertaken on both face and root sides of FSW joints using a method conforming to the ISO 5173 standard, and the critical bending diameter was evaluated. Additionally, tensile tests were performed to determine the distribution of local elongation.
