Description

The friction stir weldability of the dissimilar materials copper and aluminium alloy was studied, assessing the effects of different process parameters (rotation and traverse speeds, rotation direction (Cu or Al on advancing side), displacement and tilt angle), and the weld quality was examined by radiographic and ultrasonic inspection, tensile testing, hardness profile and electrical conductivity measurements, and SEM. Butt joints were produced between plates (10 mm thickness) of cold rolled oxygen-free electrolytically refined copper and an extruded Al alloy (EN-AW 6060-T6) using one-sided and double-sided welding with a Triflat tool. To further investigate the formation of intermetallic phases, one weld sample was annealed (400 deg.C for 4 h) and the relationship between intermetallics and embrittlement was explored.
