Description

Following an overview of initial work on friction stir welding (FSW) of titanium alloys, developments in the stationary shoulder FSW (SSFSW) technique are described, highlighting the potential of the SSFSW approach to increase welding speed (up to 200 mm/min) and minimise tool wear. Results are presented for conventional FSW on Grade 2 commercially pure Ti (thickness 5 mm), and both conventional FSW and SSFSW of Ti, 6%Al, 4%V alloy (thickness 6.35 mm). Aspects covered include: components for SSFSW and the welding mechanism; as-welded surface finish; microstructures of parent material and weld nugget; and tensile strengths and failure locations. The current state of the art and limitations for titanium alloy FSW are summarised.
