Description
An empirical process model to estimate tool shoulder temperature for different materials and friction stir welding (FSW) conditions is described that incorporates a design of experiments method and linear regression analysis (MATLAB software) with confidence/prediction intervals. Feed rate, spindle speed, weld depth and plunge depth of the tool shoulder were chosen as input parameters for the "black box" FSW model. Experiments were undertaken on three aluminium alloy sheets (heat treated/hardened wrought EN AW-6082 T6, non-heat-treatable rolled EN AW-5083 H111, casting material EN AC-46000 F). The sheets were welded in position controlled mode (2 degree tilt angle) using a Heller MCH 250 high performance tool. Temperature was measured by a thermocouple inside the tool shoulder.
