Description
A geometric feature, termed the "Wiper", was developed to improve the weld track surface finish produced by friction stir welding (FSW) and processing tools with scrolled shoulders, and experiments were undertaken to investigate the influence of "Wiper" on weld track fatigue properties and the entrainment of surface material through the action of the scrolls and tool tilt. A set of tools with 10 mm diameter shoulders was used in FSW of 7055-T6 aluminium sheet (thickness 3.2 mm) and the surface roughness of each weld track was measured. Additionally, bead-on-plate welds were formed in 7075-T651 aluminium alloy plate (thickness 6.4 mm), and fatigue crack initiation test coupons and internal mixing test specimens were fabricated from the weldments. SEM was employed to examine weld cross-sections.
