Description

A Lagrangian particle model based on the SPH (smooth particle hydrodynamics) method was developed for friction stir welding (FSW) of similar and dissimilar materials by disregarding elastic deformation and describing plastic deformation by the Johnson-Cook model, and two-dimensional simulations were undertaken for FSW of dissimilar aluminium alloys. The SPH model was formulated to incorporate an effective viscosity model such that the dependence of flow stress and viscosity on strain, strain rate and temperature was taken into account. Simulation results of temperature profiles, strain profiles and mixing profiles are reported for FSW of Al 2024 and Al 7039 alloys. Model sensitivity analysis is discussed.
