Description
Friction stir processing (FSP) was employed to repair casting defects such as shrinkage cavities and porosity in nickel aluminium bronze, and the corrosion behaviour of the processed material was examined through short-term and long-term testing and compared with that of as-cast and arc welded specimens. Corrosion behaviour was evaluated under both accelerated test and long-term seawater exposure conditions using slow strain rate, electrochemical, gel visualisation and scanning vibrating electrode tests. Accelerated testing for dealloying susceptibility was conducted in artificial seawater for four hours, and corrosion site visualisation and electrochemical scans were undertaken for fusion welded and FSP bronzes. Natural seawater and crevice corrosion test results are reported also.
