Description

An investigation is presented into the fabrication of welded joints in high strength aluminium alloys by friction stir welding (FSW) and into the application of the technology for manufacturing lightweight aircraft structures. The materials considered were 2A12-T4 (Al, 3.8-4.9%Cu) and 7A04-T6 (Al, 5-7%Zn, 1.2-1.8%Mg) panels (thickness 1.5-4 mm). FSW butt and lap joints were observed by optical microscopy, and the effect of process parameters (welding speed, rotation speed and back alignment tolerance) on tensile and fatigue strengths was studied. The welding procedure and distortion characteristics are described for a lower butt FSW central wing box panel, incorporating dissimilar 2A12-T4 and 7A04-T6 joints, and a cockpit backside assembly structure made from 2A12-T4 alloy.
