Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) of 2219-T6 aluminium alloys (Al, 6.48%Cu) was undertaken with the assistance of micro-plasma arc preheating, and welding efficiency as well as joint microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. Longitudinal butt welds were produced by FSW during which the hybrid thermal cycles in the HAZ and parent material were measured using thermocouples. Room-temperature tensile tests were carried out using an Instron-1186 testing machine. Weld cross-sections, fracture locations and fracture surfaces were observed by optical microscopy and SEM. Issues discussed include the effect of preheating parameters on weldability and the relationship between tensile properties and process parameters.
