Description
Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements were used to obtain residual stress state data for welded joints made by friction stir welding (FSW) in AA-5083-H321 aluminium alloys as a function of process parameters (rotational speed and feed rate). Butt welds were made between plate specimens (thickness 6 mm). Strain gauges were employed to determine the dependence of force footprint data during tool rotation on heat input. Synchrotron strain scanning experiments performed at beamline ID31 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, were undertaken to measure the relationship between longitudinal residual stresses, process parameters and heat input.
