Description
Arcan tests (pure tensile, pure shear and mixed tensile/shear loads) were performed on parent material (6056-T78 aluminium alloy) and friction stir welded (FSW) specimens for comparison purposes and to assess the capability of strain field measurements in characterising the nonlinear behaviour of heterogeneous materials. Strain fields were measured using a digital image correlation system with two video cameras. For FSW, parameters of 1100 mm/min constant longitudinal velocity and 1500 rpm rotational velocity were employed with a Powerstir 315. Analyses were undertaken of local strain (plastic strain in low hardness zone), welded nugget and global properties (force, displacement and energy).
