Description
To study the feasibility of SFW (spot stir friction welding) with adhesive, a process that is also called spot friction weld-bonding, aluminium 6111-T4 coupons (25x100 mm, thickness 0.9 and 1.0 mm) were used to produce SFW specimens in a lap shear configuration (25 mm overlap) with a one-component (heat curing) structural epoxy adhesive, and lap shear strength was determined for samples without adhesive, with adhesive and no cure, and with adhesive, oven cured. A cylindrical SFW tool was employed with joining times of 0.5-2.0 s. The adhesive (3 mm bead) was applied in a Z bead pattern prior to welding using a pneumatic cartridge gun. After welding, samples were cured at 165 deg.C for 30 min. Maximum load to failure was measured on an Instron tensile testing machine and failure surfaces were examined by light microscopy and SEM.
