Description

Nondestructive testing of friction stir welds is discussed. The ultrasonic testing of friction stir welded joints, advantages of phased array testing and test applications are presented briefly. The eddy current array testing technique is illustrated, advantages over single coil eddy current testing are listed, and probe designs are shown. The nature, causes and detectability of worm holes, oxide layers (kissing bonds), and galling defects are given. Omniscan equipment, which combines ultrasonic and eddy current testing, and its applications are presented.
