Description
An investigation is presented into the metallurgical features of welded joints in various structural aluminium alloys prepared by friction stir welding (FSW) and into the microstructure and hardness distribution of the weld zone. The experimental specimens comprised plates (thickness 8 mm) of 5083 P-O (Al, 4.65%Mg), A6N01S-T5 (6005C: Al, 0.44-0.68%Mg, 0.55-0.62%Si) and A7N01S-T5 (7204: Al, 4.18-4.49%Zn, 1.06-1.39%Mg, 0.38-0.64%Mn) aluminium alloys. FSW was performed in a square-butt geometry under different process conditions. The shapes, macrostructures and microstructures of the weld zone were observed and hardness distributions were measured. The relationship between heat input parameters and microstructure was examined.
