Description

A simplified friction stir welding (FSW) tool equipped with an adjustable probe was developed, FSW trial results with prototype tools were obtained and were analysed in terms of weldability. The simplified tools were realised by devising shoulders for commercially available taps and other rotating tools. Stir-in-plate FSW experiments were performed on AA-6061P-T6 aluminium alloy plates (thickness 8 mm) by using stainless steel or carbide taps and carbide cutters as the rotating tool. Cross-sectional weld macrostructure observations and hardness distribution measurements are reported for flat-shouldered tools at various probe heights.
