Description
A finite element model based on a staggered thermo-fluid solution scheme was employed to investigate flow around friction stir welding (FSW) tools, "MORFEO" code simulations were undertaken to predict flow patterns and temperature distribution in the workpiece and the results were compared with flow visualisation experiments conducted on 2024-T3 aluminium alloy sheets (thickness 3.3 mm). FSW experiments were performed using copper foils inserted transversally or longitudinally to the weld line, and samples were studied by metallographic analysis. The model adopted an Eulerian formulation with a mixed velocity-pressure discretisation for fluid flow, assuming viscoplastic material behaviour and taking into account heating owing to plastic deformation.
