Description

A computational fluid dynamics package, FLUENT, was used to model the viscous material flow during friction stir welding using two- and three-dimensional tool shapes. Two approaches were used to describe the viscosity. The first approach interpolated experimental stress vs. strain-rate data for aluminium alloy 7075. The second approach used a relationship developed by Johnson and Cook for aluminium alloy 2024. Flow and temperature fields, pressure fields, and the occurrence of voids were modelled. Particle tracks were used to show how the material flows around the tool. Three-dimensional models describing the flow in 2024 aluminium alloy were demonstrated and a global thermal model was used to model the temperature field around a featureless tool.
