Description

The development of cryogenic tank domes for gas tanks for carrier rockets using friction stir welding (FSW) and high strength aluminium alloys of the 2xxx series is outlined. The verification of an existing NC-controlled milling machining centre (Carnaghi AC 57 T) for FSW using aluminium AW-2219, thickness 15 mm, is described. An online force measurement and data acquisitioning system and strategies for controlling the tool downward force during welding were developed. Force and torque measurements were made during plunging and during welding. Heat conduction into the milling spindle was examined.
