Description

Three recently published finite element studies, modelling friction stir welding (FSW) of different aluminium alloys, were reproduced using ABAQUS software and the results were comparatively assessed. The models considered were as follows: heat transfer simulation for 2195-T8 Al alloy plate, concentrating on workpiece thermal behaviour; sequential and fully coupled thermo-mechanical analyses for FSW of 6061-T6 Al alloy, presenting temperature histories and residual stress distributions; and sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical simulation of 2024-T3 Al alloy workpiece, incorporating heat transfer between the welded plate and a backing plate, and the influence of forging load.
