Description
Work from two projects is described: "Qualistir" for the on-line quality control of friction stir welding in aluminium (by ultrasonic phased array examination of butt welded Al 7075); and a TWI feasibility study on inspection of Al 5083 butt and lap welds using ultrasonic and eddy current techniques (using a meandering winding magnetometer). Emphasis is placed on the detection method for joint line remnant flaws based on ultrasonic noise distribution analysis for butt welds, but other topics covered include: conventional flaw detection; ultrasonic frequency measurements; and a comparison between NDT and mechanical test results.
