Description
To gain further understanding of the mechanism for abnormal grain growth occurring in the stir zone of friction stir welded (FSW) aluminium alloys during post weld heat treatment (PWHT), details of the grain growth phenomena were examined in commercial purity Al (1100-H24, thickness 4 mm), not containing any strengthening precipitates, during PWHT (at 300-600 deg.C for 0.9-7.2 ks followed by water quenching). The welds were produced at a constant travel speed of 2.2 mm/s and various rotational speeds (550-3600 rpm). During FSW, temperature hysteresis was continuously recorded by an alumel-chromel thermocouple. Data on grain boundary misorientation distribution (as-welded) and grain size (before and after heat treatment) were obtained by orientation imaging microscopy in a SEM.
