Description
A description is presented of a 5-axis gantry machine for friction stir welding (FSW) of full-size aluminium structures for applications ranging from armoured vehicle chassis and other military vehicles to more delicate 3D aircraft structures. The general specifications and construction of the machine are outlined, and the spindle and head design is examined. Features of the rolling clamp system are summarised. The control system, a robust robot control product incorporating a hand-coordinate-system FSW process control module for force and position control, is discussed also.
