Description

A method investigated by Sweden for storage of nuclear waste in copper canisters sealed using friction stir welding (where EB welding has been used before) is described. Topics include: Nimonic 105 and Densimet sintered tungsten alloy tool; welding machine; joint preparation for the lid to canister joint; use of a pilot hole; welding procedure; and measurement of the welding temperature. Experience with weld quality is discussed, with reference to results of radiography, ultrasonic testing, eddy current inspection and tensile testing.
