Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) was employed to join ultra fine grained C-Mn steel (0.14%C, 0.2%Si, 1.84%Mn) sheets of 5 mm thickness using a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride tool, and the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the joint were evaluated. Welding trials were conducted on a manual vertical milling machine using an Ar gas shroud for shielding. Both bead on plate and butt welds were formed. The macrostructure and microstructure of transverse joint cross sections were observed by optical microscopy and SEM. Mechanical properties were characterised by Vickers hardness and transverse tensile tests. The effects on weld properties of bainite formation in the weld centre and grain growth in the HAZ are discussed.
