Description

An investigation is presented into the effect of frictional heating on joint behaviour during friction stir welding (FSW) between aluminium alloy 6063 and mild steel S45C, the cross-section microstructure of the weld interface, and the welding mechanism. FSW was performed by a machining centre with a WC-Co cemented carbide tool and various combinations of rotation speed and welding speed. Microstructure was observed by SEM and TEM. Surface temperature and tool torque measurements were undertaken as a function of process parameters to estimate frictional heating requirements for optimisation of welding conditions. The effect of an intermetallic compound layer in the weld interface on joint efficiency is discussed.
