Description
The relationship between microstructure and properties in friction stir welding was studied. The effects of grain size, particle size and distribution, and dislocation density on weld strength in friction stir welds in work-hardenable Al alloy AA 5251 in the annealed (O) and strain hardened stabilised (H34) conditions were investigated. Samples were examined by SEM, optical microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Hardness was determined; DSC showed that hardness distributions in the weld zone were related to deformation stored energy. The experimental work will be used as the foundations for a process model for FSW in work-hardenable Al alloys.
