Description

The microstructure, crystallographic texture and grain distribution were determined in a transverse cross section of a friction stir weld and in a plan-view section through the embedded friction stir welding (FSW) tool. The weld was obtained by FSW of a single 25 mm-thick plate of the Al-Li alloy 2195 in a bead-on-plate configuration. The cross sections were examined by optical microscopy, SEM and TEM. Microhardness was determined. Electron backscattered diffraction was used to study the grain and texture variations on the advancing side of the weld.
