Description

The friction stir welding (FSW) manufacturing technology of large aluminium extrusions for rail, automotive and aerospace applications was optimised. Tensile strength, impact value, hardness and microstructure were investigated in friction stir welds in Al alloy 6063 (Al, 0.6%Mg, 0.4%Si, 0.25%Fe, 0.1%Cu, 0.15%Mn) with T5, T6 and T651 heat treatments. Microstructure was studied by optical microscopy and SEM. High rotating speed and high traverse speed improved joint strength and appearance. The tensile strength of FSW joints was equal to that of the parent metal and the impact values of FSW joints were higher than those of the parent metal.
