Description

The friction stir welding of dissimilar aluminium alloys for the production of aircraft structural components was investigated. Welds were made between alloys 7040 and 7449 pre-aged to obtain a defined temper after post-weld ageing. Alloy 7040 was also welded to IS 237 (Al, 5%Cu, 0.3%Mg), used in the T8 temper, allowing post-weld ageing. Welds were performed on plates of 16 mm thickness. Microstructure was examined and ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation at necking, and elongation at failure point were determined. Exfoliation corrosion behaviour was assessed. Good quality welds were obtained. Post-weld ageing reduced corrosion in welds made from dissimilar alloys.
