Description
The numerical simulation of the friction stir welding process using two different commercial finite element codes is described. FORGE3, which uses an updated Lagrangian approach, was used to simulate the plunge of the pin and the THERCAST package, with an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation, was used to simulate the stationary step during which frictional heat is generated from the shoulder. Temperatures predicted by the model were compared with those obtained in experiments with AA 7075. Simulations of the stationary welding phase were also performed using a pure Eulerian formulation.
