Description

A thermomechanical finite element model of the friction stir welding process, which considered temperature distributions in the workpiece and tool loadings, was developed and validated by comparing the model simulations with experimental data for the welding of aluminium alloy 2024-T3 plate. A thermal model using a moving heat source was created, and the temperature predictions used in a mechanical model with properties dependent on both temperature and microstructure (including precipitate dissolution during welding). The model was then refined to include tool loading. Predicted residual stresses are discussed.
