Description
Thermocouples were mounted in a friction stir welding (FSW) tool to measure its temperature during the FSW of aluminium alloy 6061-T6 (Al, 1.0%Mg, 0.61%Si, 0.27%Cu, 0.10%Mn) sheet of 3 mm thickness. Type K thermocouples were mounted at various distances from the shoulder in a tool steel FSW tool which had a truncated cone-shaped pin, and also in the backing plate at various distances from the surface. An FM radio system was used to transmit and collect the temperature data. Welds were prepared at tool rotational speeds of 715-1335 rpm, and welding speeds of 30-100 mm/min. Surface temperatures at the tool shoulder were determined by extrapolation.
