Description

An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the acoustic emission (AE) method as a means of monitoring the welding state and identifying weld defects during the friction stir welding (FSW) process. FSW was carried out on 6061 aluminium alloy plates to produce welds with gap defects. The wavelet transform technique was used to decompose the AE signal to extract information to correlate the AE signal with the welding state and the presence of weld defects. A three dimensional representation of band energy using time and scale was used to provide information to analyse the welding defects.
