Description

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods were used to model the metal flow in the friction stir welding (FSW) process in order to optimise the pin profile to minimise the traversing force; welding experiments were carried out to validate the findings. A slip model, implemented using the FLUENT CFD code, was used to develop a two dimensional pin profile with a minimal traversing force. FSW experiments were carried out on 7075-T7351 aluminium alloy plates of thickness 6.35 mm (0.25 in) using two versions of the optimised profile (Trivex), with and without threads, and a Triflute welding tool for comparison purposes. Traversing forces, down forces and welding torques were measured during welding. Weld specimens were subjected to tensile testing to determine strength properties. Three dimensional slip models were then used to model the Trivex and Triflute tools.
