Description
A discussion is presented on research being undertaken to evaluate friction stir welding (FSW) as a suitable method for joining Airbus aircraft wing structures made of 2000 and 7000 series aluminium alloys. Suitable FSW machines were developed and various wing design options identified. Experiments were conducted on 2000 and 7000 series aluminium alloys containing friction stir welds to determine strength and fatigue strength properties, fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation behaviour and residual stress state. Reparability of the welds was considered, including the effect of holes introduced for subsequent repair riveting on structural integrity. The effects of corrosion during the lifetime of the aircraft were also investigated.
