Description
A discussion is presented on the industrial use of the friction stir welding (FSW) process looking at cost issues and technological developments. The cost implications of introducing FSW into production areas and the calculation of returns on investment and potential cost savings are discussed. Technological developments are considered, including the use of FSW for the welding of copper, welding trials being carried out on AA-6082 aluminium alloy to achieve higher welding speeds with acceptable welds and the move towards flexible, modular FSW machines.
