Description

This paper describes the joining criterion for lap joining of dissimilar metal materials of aluminum and stainless steel by friction stir. A criterion for evaluating the joined state or non-joined state is proposed, which is led by the concept based on the rate process theory. The proposed criterion can estimate and predict propriety of the joining state considering the temperature distribution change with the time. Lap joining experiments of dissimilar metal materials of aluminum and stainless steel are carried out and the temperature distributions changing with the time are measured at the various conditions of the tool rotation speed and the keeping time. The application of the measured temperature distribution to the proposed criterion leads to the verification that the proposed criterion is appropriate for estimating the joined state or non- joined state of the lap joining of dissimilar metal materials.
