Description
The origin of the lines of micrometre sized oxide particles observed in aluminium alloy friction stir welds was investigated. Butt and bead on plate welds were prepared using 6 mm plate of aluminium (99.999%Al and 99.5%Al) and aluminium alloy 6056 (Al, 0.69%Mg, 0.82%Si, 0.55%Cu), subjected to three alternative pickling surface cleaning procedures. The surface oxide layer was assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy prior to welding. Particle distributions after welding were determined at the surface and 2 mm below the surface by microscopy (optical and SEM).
