Description

The microstructure, mechanical properties and fatigue behaviour of friction stir welded (FSW) and MIG welded butt joints in aluminium alloy 2519-T87 (Al, 5.3-6.4%Cu, 0.1-0.5%Mn, 0.02-0.1%Ti) plate of 25.4 mm thickness were compared. Friction stir welds were prepared using a pin rotational speed of 275 rpm and a welding speed of 102 mm/min. The MIG welds were produced using two runs from each side. The welds were characterised by measurements of tensile properties and microhardness, and of fatigue crack growth and fatigue strength in air and in 3.5% sodium chloride solution.
