Description

The test results are reported for preliminary trials of the feasibility and benefits of applying angular reciprocating (reversal within one revolution) or rotary reversal (reversal after one or more revolutions) motion to the tool during friction stir welding. Weld appearance, bend test results and metallography are reported for: butt welds of 6 mm thickness aluminium alloy 5083-O; butt welds between 6 mm thickness aluminium alloys 5083-H111 and 6082-T6; 25 mm thickness aluminium alloy 6082-T6 butt welded from both sides; and lap welds of 6 mm thickness aluminium alloy 5083-H111.
