Description
The Skew-Stir™ variant of friction stir welding (FSW), in which the axis of the tool is at an angle to that of the machine spindle, is described. The technique provides an improved path for metal to flow around the tool during welding, resulting in a wider weld zone. The structure of a friction stir weld in aluminium alloy plate made by conventional FSW and a plain probe is compared with that of a weld made by Skew-Stir™. The rotary variant of Skew-Stir™ technology is described. Weld quality is outlined. The principles of the following Skew-Stir™ variants are described: orbital Skew-Stir™, orbital/rotary Skew-Stir™ and the synchronised orbital/rotary Skew-Stir™ techniques.
