Description

A spot FSW robot system was developed and used to weld lap joints in aluminium alloys (used mainly in car body assembly) and the static strength of the welded joints was compared with resistance spot welded joints. A prototype spot FSW gun was combined with a multi-articulated robot and used to weld lap joints in 1 mm thickness sheets of a series 6xxx aluminium alloy (Al, 1%Si, 1%Mn, 0.46%Mg). The effects of various welding parameters (welding force, tool rotational speed, force time) on the ultimate tensile shear strength of the welded joints were determined. The ultimate tensile shear strengths and the ultimate tensile strengths of the friction stir welded joints were compared with those of resistance spot welded joints.
