Description

The feasibility of using friction stir welding (FSW) in the construction of an aircraft central wing box from butt-welded extrusions was evaluated. An FSW procedure for welding 7055 T77511 and 7349 T6511 10 mm thickness extrusions was developed by TWI. Welding distortions were small and NDT using X rays and ultrasonic scanning showed the absence of pores and cracks. This procedure was then reproduced and improved on a semi-industrial machine at ESAB. The influence of welding parameters (travel speed and rotation speed) was investigated. The method was used to weld test panels of length 1.5 m. Compression tests were conducted on one subscaled welded panel.
