Description

The use of a new tool material, polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), developed by Brigham Young University in association with Advanced Metal Products, for friction stir welding (FSW) high-temperature materials was investigated. The manufacture of PCBN from hexagonal boron nitride powder in an ultra-high temperature and pressure press is outlined. The tool design, using a PCBN insert for the shoulder and pin, is described. PCBN tools were tested on 316L and 301 stainless steel and Alloy 600. Eleven different tools with eight different geometries were tested. The microstructure of the weld and surrounding HAZ was examined using SEM. The degree of wear and cracking was assessed. PCBN tools improved tool life over other tool materials.
