Description
The deformation microstructures formed during friction stir welding (FSW) of 7075-T6 aluminium alloy (Al, 5.76%Zn, 2.46%Mg, 1.32%Cu) were studied using SEM with electron back-scattered diffraction. The sheet thickness was 1.5 mm. The alloy was evaluated in the as-welded condition and after post-weld heat treatment (immersion in a salt bath at 500 deg.C for 60 minutes). The original parent metal grain structure was eliminated and replaced by very fine and equiaxed grains in the weld nugget. Post-weld annealing resulted in the nugget microstructure becoming unstable and being replaced by coarse irregular grains.
