Description
Friction stir welds were made in 4 mm thick sheets of aluminium alloys 2024-T3 and 6013-T6. The stress intensity factor due to residual stresses was determined using the cut compliance method. The residual stress distribution was calculated using the inverse weight function method. The longitudinal stresses were always higher than the transverse residual stresses. The residual stress state in friction stir welds of 6013-T4 was characterised using X-rays, neutrons and high-energy synchrotron radiation. The effects of welding parameters (rotation speed, transverse speed, tool size) on residual stresses in the HAZ are discussed.
