Description
Weld production tests were conducted using friction stir welding (FSW) and MIG processes for the production of aluminium panels. Production times were measured using a 2 m long double-skinned EN AW 6005 A-profile joint as the basic unit. Welding speeds were 150 and 54 cm/min, respectively, for FSW and MIG welding. The time saving associated with FSW was due to the time spent for oxide removal in MIG, lower welding speed in MIG welding and the time spent in personnel protection. The production costs were estimated. The cost elements were: machine investment cost, licence (only FSW), labour wages, tool (only FSW), filler material (only MIG), energy, and shielding gas (MIG only). MIG was more cost effective for small-volume production. FSW was more economical for larger production volumes.
