Description
An environmental comparison of friction stir welding (FSW) and MIG welding is presented in aluminium railway rolling stock for the following aspects: material consumption, energy consumption, work environment, emissions and waste, and need of transportation. The chosen functional unit was welding of 400 pieces of 20 m underframes. The results showed that FSW was environmentally preferable to MIG. The advantages of FSW were reductions in energy consumption, material use and waste production and the elimination of one degreasing process.
