Description
Details are reported of application of friction stir welding (FSW) to manufacture of double skin bodies of railway carriages for commuter lines in Japan. A "defect free" FSW process is used to weld double skin panels of length 25 m using hollow extruded bars in 6N01 aluminium alloy. Advantages of FSW as compared with MIG welding are given. Distortion, tensile properties and fatigue life of the weldments are presented. An automatic sensor controlled FSW welding machine is used, with defect detection by non-destructive testing. Development of the "one side double-skin" joint from the "double skin double side" joint is mentioned.
